How to use carbide taps?

September 3, 2019

Cemented carbide (hard alloy tap, drill, milling tools) is a kind of alloy material made by powder metallurgy process from hard compounds of refractory metals and bonded metals.

Cemented carbide has a series of excellent properties, such as high hardness, wear resistance, good strength and toughness, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, etc。Especially its high hardness and wear resistance, which remain basically unchanged even at 500
℃ , and still have high hardness at 1000℃ .

The usage of cemented carbide:

Cemented carbide is widely used as cutting tool materials, such as turning tools, milling cutters, planers, drills, boring cutters, etc. It is used to cut cast iron, non-ferrous metals, plastics, chemical fibers, graphite, glass, stone and ordinary steel. It can also be used to cut refractory materials such as heat-resistant steel, stainless steel, high manganese steel, tool steel and so on.

Basic Requirements for Machine Tools

The spindle of the machine tool runs less than 0.005mm and works smoothly.

Requirements for Tool Fitting Accuracy

When the tap is mounted on the tool system, the jitter of the machine tool spindle is less than 0.02mm.

Requirements for Bottom Hole of Thread before Tapping

The position of the bottom hole of the thread to be tapped is less than 0.04MM, and the chamfer of the hole is (0.3-2)*45 degrees, which is approximately proportional to the nominal diameter of the thread.

Selection of Tap Geometric Structure

When the machined hole is through hole, the left spiral groove or straight groove tap can be selected.

When the machined hole is blind, the right spiral groove should be selected.

When customizing blind hole taps, the length of incomplete threads should be provided, and the distance between the front end of bottom hole and the front end of incomplete threads should be increased as far as possible.

Requirements for Tool Systems

Rigid tool system should be adopted to avoid floating connection in order to prevent the tap from breaking.

Choice of Tap Cutting Fluid

Oily cutting fluid is recommended for cutting fluid. Water-soluble cutting fluid (emulsion) can also be used if conditions are not met.

Selection of Tap Cutting Speed

  • No internal cooling, no coating tap

Cutting speed v=(20~25)m/min recommended for tapping gray cast iron screw holes

Cutting speed v=(24~30)m/min recommended for tapping aluminium alloy screw holes

  • Internal cooling, uncoated tap

Cutting speed v=(23~29)m/min recommended for tapping gray cast iron screw holes

Cutting speed v=(28~35)m/min recommended for tapping aluminium alloy screw holes

  • Inner cooling, coated tap

Cutting speed v=(30~38)m/min recommended for tapping gray cast iron screw holes

Cutting speed v=(36~45)m/min recommended for tapping aluminium alloy screw holes.
